Un protagonista del Novecento racconta il mondo di oggi e il sistema Putin

Dopo le sue dimissioni dalla carica di presidente dell’Unione Sovietica, Michail Gorbacev ha rinunciato a intervenire direttamente nella politica russa, ma non ha trascorso un solo giorno lontano dalla vita pubblica. Con la sua Fondazione di studi, ha continuato a riflettere sulle questioni internazionali con articoli, interviste e conferenze, rispondendo alle sollecitazioni che riceve da numerosi Paesi. A trent’anni dall’avvio della perestrojka, analizza, in questo libro, lo sviluppo e le conseguenze di quel grande esperimento che cambiò per sempre la geografia europea: la dissoluzione dell’URSS, la transizione post comunista, il default, l’ascesa di Putin. Gli argomenti del «nuovo pensiero» sono esaminati negli scambi di idee con i maggiori leader del nostro tempo e nel confronto con le inquietudini del mondo globalizzato, dalla situazione ucraina alla gestione del potere da parte di Putin, dal terrorismo alla questione ambientale. Accanto alle considerazioni politiche non mancano i ricordi personali, dove compaiono la figura del padre, le esperienze infantili e l’amore per la moglie Raisa. Una grande lezione da uno statista che ha inciso profondamente sul processo storico del Novecento e che continua a ricordarci che «la Storia non è un destino», ma il frutto delle nostre scelte.

Above all else, he insists that solutions are to be found by returning to the atmosphere of dialogue and cooperation which was so instrumental in ending the Cold War.

This book represents the summation of Gorbachev s thinking on the course that Russia has taken since 1991 and stands as a testament to one of the greatest and most influential statesmen of the 20th century.
